How does it feel when your gaming laptop overheats while gaming? Very Bad? Overheating of gaming laptops is a common issue for gamers. A year ago I was in the same situation as you. Searching for gaming laptops with best cooling system.
I have tried and researched an average of 84 gaming laptops from different brands and tested them. Amazingly most of the laptops have an average cooling performance. Even a lot of people have strongly recommended me those laptops. Only a few of them have a perfect cooling system. And I have listed a few best of them.
So, how did all this happen?
In July 2019, I have an average core I5 6th gen gaming laptop which heats up too much while gaming. After half an hour of gaming. My laptop’s body feels as if it’s placed on fire. I decided to find a lot of solutions online. Like changing laptop position, cleaning air vents, blowing the internals of the laptop, and even using cooling pads. TO BE HONEST, nothing worked. So, I decided to buy a new gaming pc with the best cooling.
I visited all shops in my locality, searched forums like Reddit and Quora, watched YouTube videos, and read articles online. And tried to get as much information as I can. I usually go out to the shop manager and ask him if I can compare their cooling by playing the same game on each laptop. A few allowed me. Through research and hands-on usage, I compared the cooling performance of nearly 84 top-notch laptops.
Factors Affecting Laptops Cooling
To be honest there are hundreds of factors that are affecting the cooling performance of laptops. But here are the things that play a major role!
-
Thermal Design of Laptop
Thermal design means how well the heat sink, heat pipes, intake ducts, output ducts, and fans are engineered.
The heat sink design should be such that it collects maximum heat from the heating source using heat pipes and blows away this heat through convective cooling (fans).
Heat Pipes need to be made of pure copper and they must be superconductive.
Intake and output ducts must be designed so that they may support maximum airflow.
The fan design (n-type, simple design, aero file design), the number of fans used, and fan CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute) are contributing directly to the thermal performance. Indirectly CFM means how much air a fan moves. So we can say cool gaming laptops have an excellent thermal design.
-
Laptop Casing
The body material of the laptop plays a major role in its cooling. Usually, the chassis is made up of plastics or aluminum. Aluminum is a conductive material and therefore it conducts heat much better making your laptop prone to overheating issues. So, always prefer a metal body laptop for better cooling.
-
Components Heat Dissipation
The components present on the motherboard are the only reason why your laptop overheats too much. The components used should have a minimum heat dissipation. You can check them by checking their TDP (Thermal Design Power) as TDP somehow correlates with heat dissipation. The lower the TDP the lower will be heat dissipation.

FAQ’s
1) What is vapor chamber technology?
Instead of using multiple heat pipes, many manufacturers use a large flat chamber that uses its entire body to cool the CPU or GPU, which is called vapor chamber technology.
2) Does a higher number of blades in a fan increase airflow?
A higher number of blades in a fan helps achieve stability and although the airflow is not much different, the reduced turbulence improves acoustics by a lot.
3) Can we change the fan speeds in gaming laptops?
Although it should be an option in all laptops, most low-end gaming laptops do not allow fan speed customization while the high-end ones allow that through software applications.
4) Can overclock increase the temperatures of the laptop?
Overclocking a component can increase the temperatures because the voltage gets increased as well, which further increases the heat output.
5) What temperatures are safe for a CPU or GPU in a laptop?
Most gaming laptops can withstand temperatures around 95 degrees and it should not be much of a problem with intense gaming sessions but going past that could be problematic in the longer run.
Bought the Omen 17, only mine has the 2080. So far I like it, although I really haven’t used it to the max …. love it’s performance.
