How does it feel when your gaming laptop overheats while gaming? Very Bad? Overheating of gaming laptops is a common issue for gamers. A year ago I was in the same situation as you. Searching for gaming laptops with best cooling system.

I have tried and researched an average of 84 gaming laptops from different brands and tested them. Amazingly most of the laptops have an average cooling performance. Even a lot of people have strongly recommended me those laptops. Only a few of them have a perfect cooling system. And I have listed a few best of them.

So, how did all this happen?

In July 2019, I have an average core I5 6th gen gaming laptop which heats up too much while gaming. After half an hour of gaming. My laptop’s body feels as if it’s placed on fire. I decided to find a lot of solutions online. Like changing laptop position, cleaning air vents, blowing the internals of the laptop, and even using cooling pads. TO BE HONEST, nothing worked. So, I decided to buy a new gaming pc with the best cooling.

I visited all shops in my locality, searched forums like Reddit and Quora, watched YouTube videos, and read articles online. And tried to get as much information as I can. I usually go out to the shop manager and ask him if I can compare their cooling by playing the same game on each laptop. A few allowed me. Through research and hands-on usage,  I compared the cooling performance of nearly 84 top-notch laptops.

Factors Affecting Laptops Cooling

To be honest there are hundreds of factors that are affecting the cooling performance of laptops. But here are the things that play a major role!

  • Thermal Design of Laptop

Thermal design means how well the heat sink, heat pipes, intake ducts, output ducts, and fans are engineered.

The heat sink design should be such that it collects maximum heat from the heating source using heat pipes and blows away this heat through convective cooling (fans).

Heat Pipes need to be made of pure copper and they must be superconductive.

Intake and output ducts must be designed so that they may support maximum airflow.

The fan design (n-type, simple design, aero file design), the number of fans used, and fan CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute) are contributing directly to the thermal performance. Indirectly CFM means how much air a fan moves. So we can say cool gaming laptops have an excellent thermal design.

  • Laptop Casing

The body material of the laptop plays a major role in its cooling. Usually, the chassis is made up of plastics or aluminum. Aluminum is a conductive material and therefore it conducts heat much better making your laptop prone to overheating issues. So, always prefer a metal body laptop for better cooling.

  • Components Heat Dissipation

The components present on the motherboard are the only reason why your laptop overheats too much. The components used should have a minimum heat dissipation. You can check them by checking their TDP (Thermal Design Power) as TDP somehow correlates with heat dissipation. The lower the TDP the lower will be heat dissipation.

Razer Blade-series laptops are great competitors of ROG Zephyrus-series laptops and it would be a mind-boggling question to think of a winner among these. Right now, Razer provides two Blade series laptops; one being the Base Gaming series and the other one being the Advanced Gaming series.

The Base Gaming laptop fulfills the needs of most gamers but the Advanced Gaming laptop serves the elite gamers. The design of both laptop series is similar, having a black theme with the Razer logo at the top of the laptop. Some people, including us, dislike the logo, as it feels a bit overkill for an elegant laptop like this. The laptop features a CNC aluminum chassis with a unibody frame, which is one of the reasons for its elegance.

The technical specifications of the Razer Blade 15 Advanced Gaming are quite similar to the ROG Zephyrus S15. First of all, this laptop has a gray-colored theme and has boxy corners, similar to some professional-class laptops. The lid of the laptop is significantly higher than the base of the laptop and uses a single large hinge at the center. The RGB lighting in the laptop is present in the Alienware logo at the top as well as the back-lighting of the keyboard.

The best thing about the laptop is that it offers a lot of customization during buying. You can buy the laptop with Intel Core i7-10875H or Intel Core i9-10980HK. The RAM capacity of the laptop is 32 GB, as it uses two 16 GB sticks of 2666 MHz. The frequency of the sticks is although not so good, it should not be much of a problem with Intel processors.

Acer Predator Helios 300 is no doubt the cheapest laptop on the list but it still packs quite some performance under the hood. The build of this laptop is not as good as the likes of Zephyrus S15 or Razer Blade 15 Advanced Gaming because it utilizes both metal and plastic in its body and feels a bit flimsy. The thickness of this laptop is more than any other laptop on the list but that is why it harbors a powerful cooling solution too. There is a lot of RGB lighting on the laptop, mainly due to the larger part of the keyboard keycaps being transparent, allowing RGB lighting to seep through.

The laptop supports Intel 10th generation processors, up to Intel Core i7-10750H, which is a Hexa-core processor with twelve threads. Cooling Performance:

For cooling, HP OMEN 17 uses five copper heat pipes fitted with multiple heat sinks that can be seen from the bottom since there is a large grill at the bottom. Two large fans expel the air out of the rear and the right side which is somewhat louder than the competitors.

The 17.3-inch screen of the laptop offers a 144-Hz refresh rate, which although seems slow compared to other laptops on the list; is no doubt a fast display, especially for those who have not yet experienced high-refresh-rate gaming.

The next laptop that we have on the list is HP OMEN 17 and the OMEN series by HP is quite similar to the Helios series by Acer. Both of these laptop series comes with mid to high-end specifications and provide an impressive price-to-performance ratio. The build quality of this laptop feels plasticky just like the Helios 300, although it is not going to break with usage.

The design of the laptop feels somewhat bland at first since the lid of the laptop has wide spaces at the sides. Despite that, there are two hinges on the laptop and those too are quite small. FAQ’s

1) What is vapor chamber technology?

Instead of using multiple heat pipes, many manufacturers use a large flat chamber that uses its entire body to cool the CPU or GPU, which is called vapor chamber technology.

2) Does a higher number of blades in a fan increase airflow?

A higher number of blades in a fan helps achieve stability and although the airflow is not much different, the reduced turbulence improves acoustics by a lot.

3) Can we change the fan speeds in gaming laptops?

Although it should be an option in all laptops, most low-end gaming laptops do not allow fan speed customization while the high-end ones allow that through software applications.

4) Can overclock increase the temperatures of the laptop?

Overclocking a component can increase the temperatures because the voltage gets increased as well, which further increases the heat output.

5) What temperatures are safe for a CPU or GPU in a laptop?

Most gaming laptops can withstand temperatures around 95 degrees and it should not be much of a problem with intense gaming sessions but going past that could be problematic in the longer run.
